When we last left the National Football League, the power had just come back on in the Superdome in New Orleans and the Baltimore Ravens were celebrating a Super Bowl XLVII victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Since that early February day, weve seen lots of changes around the league from superstar players switching teams, to new uniforms and logos. Weve even seen the grand re-arrival and exit of quarterback Tim Tebow with the New England Patriots. The question is which team is favoured to win Super Bowl XLVIII? The defending NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers are expected to be back in the mix again this season. Theyve added key players on both offence and defence in an attempt to get over the hump and capture their first title since 1995. They even grabbed receiver Anquan Boldin from the Ravens to strengthen their roster and weaken the team that beat them for the title at the end of last season. With a strong offence, defence and starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick entering his first full season at the helm, the Bay Area team looks strong. One of the biggest threats to their Conference crown comes from within the NFC West division, in the form of the Seattle Seahawks. Everything the 49ers do well, the Seahawks are also very proficient at, including running the read option with their mobile quarterback, in this case the versatile Russell Wilson. In the backfield, running back Marshawn Lynch is as physical as they come and dealing with him over four quarters tends to wear out even the best defences. The Seahawks will have to play without superstar acquisition Percy Harvin, who could miss the entire season with an injury, but they didnt have him last season either and came just a few plays short of playing in the Conference final. Always known as a strong regular season team, the Atlanta Falcons turned it up in last seasons playoffs and it took the biggest comeback in NFC Championship history to deny them a shot at the Super Bowl. Running back Steven Jackson is a great addition to a veteran core offence that boasts Matt Ryan at quarterback and future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez. They will face improved competition from their NFC South division, but should find themselves in the playoffs with another real shot at getting all the way to the big game. Over in the AFC, the Denver Broncos behind Peyton Manning look loaded up and ready to take another crack at playoff success. After a rough start to last season, Manning and his new boys found a rhythm and 11 straight victories on their way to the top seed in the Conference. They were then erased in the division round of the playoffs by the eventual champion Ravens. With players like Wes Welker and Quinton Jammer now in the fold, the Broncos are going be tough to beat every night and a tough out in the post-season. Perennial contender New England Patriots are lining up for another shot at the crown as well. Though they have dealt with a lot of turmoil in the offseason, the team is now ready to put the controversies behind them and perform on the field. Quarterback Tom Brady will have to get used to not throwing the ball to Welker who jumped ship to the Broncos, but he has in the past had a history of making the players on the field with him much better. If he can find a way to elevate this group, they have the talent to be the last ones standing at the end of the season. There are many other teams that also find themselves in this conversation including the defending champion Ravens, Green Bay Packers and surging Cincinnati Bengals. Raonic was beaten 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-4 by 10th-seeded Nishikori on Monday in a four hour 19 minute struggle that tied a record as the latest-to-finish match in U.S. Open history. "You learn from losses like that, you rebound and thats what makes a champion," said Martin Laurendeau, the captain of Canadas Davis Cup team. "It was the kind of match I was expecting. Four or five sets very close. I didnt expect it to finish that late but we knew it would be a long night in New York. In a way thats a bit of what makes New York New York. . . The crowd stays up late." On Tuesday, Laurendeau named Raonic, Frank Dancevic, Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil to the team that will battle Columbia beginning Sept. 12 in Halifax. One thing the players wont have to deal with in Halifax will be the sweltering heat at the U.S. Open. Canadas Eugenie Bouchard needed a medical time-out as she was eliminated by left-hander Ekaterina Makarova earlier Monday. "The conditions will be significantly different in Halifax," said Laurendeau. "Well be playing indoors under some nice air conditioning, which is going to welcomed." Raonic went 5-1 in Davis Cup action last year to help lead Canada to the semifinals and at No. 6 is the highest-ranked Canadian singles player of all time. Canada started the season in the World Group for the third consecutive year, playing their first-round tie on the road in February against Japan in Tokyo. But injuries to Raonic and Pospisil contributed to a disappointing 4-1 loss, fforcing this match against Columbia to stay in the World Group.dddddddddddd Canada enters as the favourite, ranked eighth in the world to Columbias 26th. The Colombian Tennis Federation is sending Santiago Giraldo, Alejandro Falla and doubles pair Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah. "Our guys are healthy," Laurendeau said. "Theyve played a lot of tennis. Theyve accomplished a lot of personal milestones in the process." Dancevic, who took Canadas sole point in Japan in February with a victory over Go Soeda, won a Challenger event in Kosice and reached the second round at Wimbledon. This is Nestors 22nd year playing Davis Cup and hes on a roll after capturing four ATP World Tour titles at Brisbane, Sydney, Madrid and Rome and hes currently ranked No. 5 in the world. Pospisil also started 2014 on a roll, reaching the semifinals at Chennai, the third round at the Australian Open and a career-high ranking of No. 25 before being sidelined with a back injury. This summer he started a doubles partnership with American Jack Sock that saw the duo go on a 14-0 run, including the Wimbledon championship. This year Raonic became the first Canadian man in the Open Era to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam at the French Open and then made the semifinals at Wimbledon. He is the only player on the ATP World Tour to have made the quarter-finals or better at six Masters 1000 events this year. Laurendeau says theyre feeling confident. "And also very motivated to stay in the World Group and have another go at it next year, because we feel we had a good run last year but we feel we can go even deeper." As for Raonic, Laurendeau says he has time to rest before Halifax. "Hes our No. 1 player. Hes got a job to do soon."
