PITTSBURGH -- The offence cant hold onto the ball. The defence cant take it away. The receivers cant get open. The running backs cant find any holes and the linebackers cant cause any chaos. Other than that, the first two weeks have been just fine for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh is 0-2 for the first time in 11 years following a 20-10 loss at Cincinnati on Monday night, another largely lifeless performance that did little to hint at better days ahead with unbeaten Chicago (2-0) visiting next Sunday. "Right now, weve got to keep playing," free safety Ryan Clark said. "We cant panic and abandon what we have learned. We do have to shore some things up. We do have to be a lot more sound. If we dont, this is going to keep happening." The Steelers have become one of the NFLs most consistent -- not to mention resilient -- franchises by dealing with adversity on the fly. Old players move on, new ones come forward. At the moment, its not happening. Pittsburghs rebuilt offensive line -- now playing without injured star Maurkice Pouncey -- is struggling. So is quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and whoever happens to line up behind him in the backfield. The Steelers are 31st in the NFL in points (19), yards rushing (37.5 per game) and yards per carry (2.4). Felix Jones took his chance at the ever-turning carousel at running back and managed 37 yards on 10 carries, all of it coming in the first half. After halftime, Jones disappeared entirely, only touching the ball on a kickoff return. Not exactly the dedicated commitment to running the ball coach Mike Tomlin or offensive co-ordinator Todd Haley talked about at length during the off-season. "Weve got a lot of young guys in there that were trying infuse and they need to get better in a hurry," Tomlin said. "They need to increase the rate of that improvement. We havent to this point, but Im optimistic about our work moving forward." Tomlin might be one of the few. The Steelers havent missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons this millennium and even rallied from an 0-2 start in 2002 to grab a wild card spot behind unlikely hero Tommy Maddox. Only one player on the current active roster -- defensive end Brett Keisel -- was on that team. Roethlisberger was still in college at Miami (Ohio). Tomlin was coaching defensive backs for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and rookie outside linebacker Jarvis Jones was in middle school. Though Tomlin continues to express his belief in Haleys system, he understands no one is above reproach at the moment. Asked if theres a problem with the offensive game plan, Tomlin is quick to spread the blame. "Theres been a problem with our functioning," he said. "Theres been a problem with our production. Theres been a problem with our points. You can point to whatever you want to point to in regards to that, and obviously if the plays arent working well then were susceptible to that judgment. "Im not going to lose a whole bunch of sleep over that." The sleeplessness will come with trying to find a way out of a funk that could turn into a freefall if the Steelers cant regroup quickly. Only five teams have recovered from an 0-3 start to reach the playoffs. Given the abysmal play by the rest of the AFC North -- Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cleveland and Cincinnati are just 2-6 so far with nary a victory outside the division -- theres time to get it together. Help might be on the way. Tight end Heath Miller is expected be a full participant in practice this week, a major step in his rehab from right knee surgery. Miller was in the midst of the finest season of his career before being hurt in a loss to the Bengals last December. Tomlin didnt rule Miller out this week, but allowed "we are not expecting Heath to step out of a phone booth with a cape on." Maybe not, but it wouldnt hurt. If he cant go, the Steelers will try to fix whats broken with the parts on hand. Tomlin said hes open to re-evaluating the roles of some players to find a spark. Roethlisberger, the two-time Super Bowl winner faced with potentially the first losing season of his career, is all for it. "We need some guys to step up, older guys to step up and younger guys to get it going and avoid the road were going down," Roethlisberger said. One that appears to be getting longer by the week. SEATTLE -- Chris Davis hit a leadoff homer in the 10th inning, Nelson Cruz also went deep and the Baltimore Orioles overcame a record-tying start by Felix Hernandez in a 2-1 victory Friday night over the Seattle Mariners. Hernandez struck out 10 in seven innings and left with the score tied 1-all. It was his 13th consecutive start with at least seven innings and no more than two runs allowed, matching Tom Seavers major league mark set for the New York Mets in 1971. Chief Bender held the previous AL record of 12 in a row established in 1907. Kendrys Morales had a sacrifice fly in his first game back with the Mariners, who have lost four straight and are 2-6 since the All-Star break. Left fielder Steve Pearce threw out a runner at the plate for Baltimore, which remained three games in front of the second-place New York Yankees in the AL East. Davis sent a 1-2 pitch from Charlie Furbush (1-5) into the right-field seats for his 17th home run. Cruz connected off Hernandez in the second for his 29th of the season, keeping him one behind Chicago White Sox rookie Jose Abreu for the big league lead. Abreu hit No. 30 on Friday night in a victory over Minnesota. Darren ODay (3-1) worked the ninth and Zach Britton earned his 19th save in 22 opportunities. Baltimore won an instant replay review for the final out. Hernandez gave up five hits and walked none. He is 7-1 with a 1.36 ERA, 113 strikeouts and 17 walks during his last 13 starts. The Mariners had a series of chances, but Orioles starter Kevin Gausman consistently threw the right pitch to work out of most trouble. Seattle advanced a runner to third with two outs in the first, third and fourth. Endy Chavez was pinned there in the first inning when Kyle Seager struck out. Brad Miller reached third in the third, but Robinson Cano bounced out to first. Seager was stranded in the fourth when Logan Morrison struck oout.dddddddddddd Then in the fifth, it appeared the Mariners had something going after Millers one-out walk. Chavez grounded a ball through the right side, with Miller racing to third. However, the umpires ruled immediately that the ball ticked off Millers shoe. He was ruled out and Chavez was credited with a single. Chavez stole second and James Jones lined a single to left. Chavez tried to score, but was thrown out easily by Pearce. Seattle finally broke through in the sixth. Cano opened with a triple into the right-field corner. Morales, in his first game since Thursdays trade with Minnesota, lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Cano made a nifty, left-handed sweep of the plate to avoid the tag. Cruzs first-pitch solo shot in the second curled into the left-field corner, clearing the wall by not much more than a yard as Hernandez flashed an incredulous look. Hernandez had been among the toughest pitchers to take deep. He had allowed five home runs this season, just two in his previous 16 starts. The Orioles have 125 home runs, matching Toronto for most in the majors. NOTES: Orioles RHP Ubaldo Jimenez, on the disabled list with a sprained right ankle, threw a 44-pitch simulated game Friday afternoon. "If he feels well (Saturday) we have a schedule for him to go out and pitch once, maybe twice" manager Buck Showalter said. "Hes going to have to get some innings." . Baltimore 3B Manny Machado missed his fourth straight game with a sore back but is close to returning. Showalter said Machado was available Friday and expects to start him this weekend. . With the addition of Morales, the Mariners sent DH Jesus Montero back to Triple-A Tacoma. Montero was with the big club for just one game. . Hernandez surpassed 1,000 innings at Safeco Field. Among active pitchers, only Mark Buehrle (now with Toronto) has more innings pitched at one venue -- 1,306 2-3 at U.S. Cellular Field. ' ' '
